CWE Halloween 2025

These days it’s a race against the clock at best, with sunset around 6:40pm and darkness an hour later. During the work week I mean, and referring to shooting outdoors in natural light. I let the shortening days hem me into shooting events on weekends—and I do like shooting them, I just mean it becomes the only option. And heck, really, this one was shot entirely at night anyway.
I like plucking a discernible image out of a complex situation. A lot of movement and subjects and noise, a lot of mess and humanity. Events are great for that. I didn’t do a great job at this event, though. One thing I’ve noticed is a certain shot or concept for shooting I need to avoid from here on out. When a circle forms around a performer I tend to take a fully contextualized 50mm shot. I’ll drop a knee, wait until they’re ideally facing me and centered, and snap away. There’s a few variations at least below and I think it’s deserving of an embargo. Although on the other hand, it does sometimes work.
