Winter Storm 2025, & Previous Weeks
With the onset of shorter days and a reluctance to try my hand at night photography I’ve lapsed both in my photography practice (not entirely) and posting. Some other factors have contributed but I haven’t really gone out more than a couple times a month since October. I reconnected with my camera a bit after the holidays when a rogue snowstorm blustered its way through the midwest. This past Sunday, as President Carter passed away, the storm opened with a volley of sleet and freezing rain, which sometimes would alter to snow, but then became freezing rain and snow together, then snow and sleet, and so on. That night after a lull it gifted us a much more pleasant, soft snowfall of many inches, I think 9” total for the metro area.

This was taken on Sunday at Arsenal and Grand, long before things got out of hand.
I’ve gone out for brief, intentional shoots a few times since it fell and might do so again tomorrow evening, possibly downtown if I’m feeling plucky. I haven’t near done it justice or seen all I would like—for some reason I feel inclined to shoot around the hospitals. Maybe I have the blizzard episode of ER on my mind.

You might say that George Bernard Shaw was touched with the spirit of Capability Brown. You might say that if, for example, you recently watched a British murder mystery show where Capability Brown—whose name is so delightful it bears repeating—was mentioned and you then geeked out on him and the history of English gardens.

I took the wrong approach with this. I’d thought about swinging by some night to see about shooting that red neon circle in HDR and figured it would make a nice contrast with the snow, but by the time I got here I was freezing and just shot this one unflattering angle—and from way too far away.
